Defining Soccer- Soccer is a sport that is played worldwide where there are two teams that face off against each other on a field with a wide net on each side of it. The objective of the game is to have the most goals by the end of a match, that consists of ninety minutes, which is divided into two forty-five minute halves, by using a round ball that players have to kick in their opponent's nets. Each team consists of eleven players, where one player is a goalkeeper and the other ten players play in a position that their coach decides is best for them. Players are only allowed to use their legs, head, and chest to move the ball; however, the goalkeeper is the only player that is allowed to use his hands along with the rest of his body when he is in a marked boxed called the penalty box that is in front of the net. After he leaves the box he is only allowed to use his legs, head, and chest. Failure to abide by the rules of using only your legs, head, and chest can result in fouls, giving an opposing team an advantage in a match. With a foul, then all is stopped and an opposing team is able to have some time to create a play that can give them the chance to score a goal. Fouls can also be called if a player is showing unsportsmanlike behavior, if they make a bad tackle (stick their legs in to steal a ball from an opposing player but end up hurting them or obstructing the match), or excessive bodying (pushing players off when you have the ball to keep possession of it). If a foul happens inside the penalty box, the opposing team is given a penalty, where one player is selected to face off against a goalkeeper and attempt to score a sitting ball past him that is eleven meters away. Every player has their individual role when they are playing, but a team can still be divided into four sections. There is the goalkeeper, defense, midfield, and attack. The goalkeeper’s job is to block any shots that seem to be going into the net by using every part of his body to do so. The defense’s job is to stay back and not allow the opposing team to make it past them so they have an opportunity to shoot the ball past the goalkeeper. The midfield’s job is to come up and down while moving the ball around so that the team can have an opportunity to score. The attack’s job is to receive the ball and try to score it past the opposing goalkeeper. Some other rules that exist in soccer are the out of bounds rule and the offside rule. The out of bounds rules make it so that if a ball goes out of the field that is marked where it is on the left or right side, the team that did not touch the ball last before it went out, has the opportunity to bring it back into play by using a throw in. They can use their hands to throw it in because the ball is not officially in play. They can use the throw in so that they can give a ball to their teammate and recuperate possession of the ball again. If a ball goes out of bounds behind the net, the ball will either be called for a goal kick or a corner kick. Depending on what team touched the ball last before it went out, will determine this. If an opposing team touches the ball last before it went out, the goalkeeper is given a goal kick which allows them to kick the ball downfield and attempt to give it to their teammate. If it is the other way around, the opposing team is given a corner kick in which they go to the corner of the field, cross a sitting ball in, so that one of their teammates could have an opportunity to score. The offside rule was created to make matches fair. It states that if an opposing player receives a ball when they are past the last player of the other team (player in front of the goalkeeper, last player does not include the goalkeeper), the ball is considered to be out of play. A player needs to receive a ball before they make it past the last player or receive a ball when they are right next to the last player. These rules are administered by three referees, two that are in charge of offsides (one by each net), and one that is in charge of fouls. Overall soccer is a much simpler sport compared to others that exist. If a person understands these main concepts, they will be able to understand what is going on when a team is actually playing.
