My Obsession

Word Count: 516

What is my obsession? Well, that is difficult to say. I have many obsessions; however, I do have one that I do not share too frequently. That obsession is with editing. Whether it is a video or a photo, I enjoy putting in my time to turn something bland into something creative. For example, if I ever go out on a trip, I will take my camera with me, film pieces of my trip, compile the clips together, and make a cool video out of them. I also take pictures and touch them up so that the colors on them can pop while still seeming natural. I fix every detail I can think of to make the photos look nice. Editing could take anywhere between hours to days, depending on how long I decide to make a video or how presentable I decide to make a photo, but the results at the end make me feel as if the time that was put in was worth it. When I finished editing my projects, they turn into memories, while also working as stepping stones in further improving my craft. Plus, I hardly ever notice the time that passes when I work on a project. I could be working on something for three hours straight and feel as if I have only been working on it for forty minutes. When I am in the zone, it is extremely difficult to remove myself from the zone. When I am working on a project, I will not call it a night until I am satisfied with at least half of what I have done. It is difficult to please myself as I always want everything to look as it does in my imagination, making it nearly impossible to finish something when I am trying to display everything I think of outside of my head. This factors into the large amounts of time I spend on editing a project. In my life, I have some friends that enjoy editing as I do, although it may not be to the extent as me. We have collaborated on projects and have made some entertaining videos that we have shared on social media. Sometimes we get good feedback and sometimes we do not, regardless it still pushes us to create something better for the next time. Throughout the years, my friends and I have built this obsession for editing through people that have influenced and inspired us off of social media. They showed us that we as individuals have the power tell a story whether it may be through a picture or a video. Seeing how these individuals uniquely formatted their content, made me want to format my own content as well. From the moment I began to edit to the present, I have improved and continue to improve through each edit I make. I view editing as a type of entertainment. It is a form of expression that allows me to show my creativity. It is like having a blank canvas, where opportunities are endless and limitation are caused by the imagination.

  1. Dear JeanCarlo, I'm interested in where this passion started. When was the first time that you picked up a camera? How did you learn to edit in this way? Who taught you? What is it like to "be in the zone" as you say? Would you be able to describe it in detail? One thing to work on in your creative world is specificity---make sure that the reader/viewer can vividly see what you're trying to convey.
