Located in Chicago, Illinois, David Matthews is a forty seven year old detective that has been serving the law for twenty two years. He has won many awards due to his accomplishments in solving numerous cases and has been considered to be the greatest detective in Illinois. Although he has received countless amounts of glory and notoriety, he does not let, what other people may call, “fame,” get to his head. He does not care for glory and does his job well because he is motivated by the belief that being a detective was what he was meant to be. He was raised as an only child to a mother and father who also worked for the government. His mother was a police officer and his father was a detective like him. David Matthews saw his parents as an inspiration and he took it upon himself to train and join the force in his early twenties. As the years have gone by, his father has passed away while his mother remains in a retirement home that he tends to visit twice a week. David Mathews is an average sized man, about five-foot-nine, and is a little overweight. He has a thin beard that reaches from one side of his face to the other, getting thicker as the days go by. He has bushy eyebrows and black hair that fading into grey because of his age. Matthews has dark brown eyes and a scar on his cheek from a fight he got into while solving a case. He smokes cigars and wears slacks with a buttoned shirt underneath his black trench coat. The color choices for his outfits are little to none as he either wears, black or navy blue slacks, a white or light blue shirt, and a black or red tie. He used to strongly follow religion, but has ceased to continue to do so as his outlook on the world has changed over the years into making him believe that he is already living in an inferno. A lot of tragic things have happened to him in the recent year adding to his negative attitude towards life. For example, David Matthews is a father of two teenage girls, Aliea and Margaret. He has a strong affection towards them and would do anything to keep them out of harm's way. He tries to visit them as frequently as he can but due to custody rights and the ex-wife he divorced a year ago, he can not always do that. He is always under a lot of stress as he always makes the world's problems his problems, which was one of the main reasons for his ex-wife to file for a divorce. David Mathews barely rests and consumes a lot of caffeine to get through his long days. He has recently lost his longtime friend and detective partner, Julius Martinez, to the hands of a serial killer that he is desperate to take down. He is heartbroken that his friend has passed away and has taken on the case of his murder as a personal matter. Detective David Matthews is a restless man and when he puts his mind on something, he gives his all. He wants answers and he wants them now.

  1. I like how you've kept this in paragraph form--it makes it easy to get a clear sense of David as someone who has been through a lot. I particularly like the detail about both of his parents being in some form of law enforcement (mom as a cop, dad as a detective), and so he has this family legacy that he's playing out too. I like too that he's persistant and seems like he must be good at his job, though it's a difficult one. Can you point out his vulnerabilities as well? For your podcast, how can you keep the listener guessing from moment to moment? Since you've create a scene that's basically good vs. evil, you're going to have to work that much harder to surprise the listener and to continue keeping us in suspense. To do this well, you have to give David a fighting chance to come up on top. He has to be able to possibly change the outcome of the situation, rather than having the situation unfold without his prescence impacting it all.
